Self-study - tutoring, conversation workshops, grammar, etc.
SELF-LEARNING
Find out more about self-study language learning:
Self-study, or guided self-study, is a way of learning on your own. It requires you to customize your learning path to meet your specific needs. This system gives you a great deal of freedom of choice (in terms of intermediate objectives, choice of resources and documents, but also among the various activities or workshops offered by the Center). You go at your own pace and have greater control over your learning.
Examples of self-study resources: the foreign-language press, the ASSIMIL method, online resources from the MyCow site, in English and French as a foreign language (FLE), the goFLUENT language-learning platform, REFLEX software (in English, German and Spanish), resources for working towards certifications (CLES, TOEIC, TOEFL, DELE, DALF, TCF, etc.), bilingual or foreign-language audio books and novels, etc.
- What does self-study mean for me?
Self-study means you have to invest in yourself, because you'll be in charge of your own learning path. You'll need to take the initiative in determining your objectives, defining content, choosing the right resource and even self-assessing. For this to work, you need to be motivated and ready to organize your learning.
- Does self-study mean I learn everything on my own?
However, self-study does not mean you learn everything on your own. The CARLAM team and our language tutors will provide you with information and support throughout your course, and can help you define your objectives. You can make an appointment with a tutor by registering for one of the available slots on CARLAM's AMeTICE (Moodle) page.
Working sessions with a tutor (conversation, tutoring, pedagogical/linguistic/grammatical help, goFLUENT help) or in teletandem/linguistic and intercultural tandem will play a decisive role in the quality of your work and your progress, and therefore in your BONUS grade (for students concerned by the BONUS scheme: "Approfondissement des connaissances" - self-training in languages).
- What is a conversation session?
A conversation session is a group meeting with a native-speaking language tutor (or sometimes a student). Conversation sessions enable you to develop a number of skills, such as continuous speaking, interaction, listening comprehension, oral expression, lexical acquisition and re-use, grammar, phonetics, and the discovery of new cultural content.
Sessions take place in small groups of 5 to 8 people, either face-to-face or remotely.
- What is a tutoring session?
A tutoring session (or tutoring appointment) is a one-to-one meeting lasting 20 to 30 minutes with a face-to-face or distance language tutor. The role of a tutor is to :
- advise you and show you how to make the most of CRL resources
- answer your questions
- help you improve your ability to learn independently and build your confidence.
- accompany you as you learn on the goFLUENT language platform, help you with grammar/linguistic points and correct you.
- What is Teletandem/Tandem?
Teletandem/Tandem is an exchange between two students of different mother tongues. The two languages are practiced in a spirit of mutual help and friendship, under the supervision of a language tutor. Students enrolled in this program take part in exchanges with international students from other partner universities. The aim of Teletandem/Tandem is to develop students' language and intercultural skills, as well as their autonomy.
